So far it is a dirty, vicious election campaign full of racism, communalism
mudslinging and all kinds of personal attacks and insults. The racism stems
from the fact that there are one or two white candidates!! This shows how
narrow the mauritian mind still is. I wonder what the white tourists on whom
Mauritius depends so much for its economic health think. They must surely
think that the mauritian hospitality is but a thin veneer over a deep seated
hatred 'a la Mugabe' for white people. Perhaps Berenger should paint his face
black when he appears on TV to impress on his opponents the stupidity of
casting their votes based only on the skin colour of a candidate.
At every election mauritians are dragged back in time to the pre-independence
mindset. It is sickening when this happens. It will continue until all those who
were adults when Mauritius gained its independence have died out and they
can no longer condition the young. My opinion is that when names like Ramgoolam
and Berenger evoke no communal emotions in the heart of the average mauritian
we will be ready to dismantle the virulent edifice of communalism which is
preventing us from behaving like a civilised people.
This will take a long time but communalism like apartheid, communism etc by
its divisive nature cannot have a future. It will naturally and slowly be eroded
away everywhere in the world with the evolution of the human soul. The soul is
continuously striving towards unity with 'The One without a second' where
opposites and divisiveness cannot exist. No one can resist this push of evolution.
To try to resist it is painful. This is why when communalism is preached at election
time one is afraid that it can explode into violence. And fear is a painful emotion
and can last until one is ready for the grave. Mauritius has sat on a power keg with
a long lighted fuse for a long time. Since independence this fuse is getting shorter
very quickly. A very close result of this election and it can reach the keg in a flash.
We can give the communalism edifice a push to topple it quickly. This happened
to apartheid and communism but it will require some inevitable violence. If we are
not prepared to accept the latter, we will have to just sit down and wait for decades
and watch the poison work its way through the nation until it dies a natural death.
Communalism will cease in Mauritius one day but it will take centuries for this to take
place spontaneously. Everything has an end. Nothing is permanent, fixed forever.
Even democracy has an end. What will replace democracy is unknown.
It is coincidental that there will also be an election in the UK soon. When one compares
the mauritian compaign with the English one, it is hard to make the claim that we
are a civilised nation. We have made tremendous progress economically but psychologically
we have not emerged from the primordial cave yet. I wonder what the neighbouring
african countries think of us. We definitely have nothing to teach them as far as human
behaviour is concerned. We want to make Mauritius a 'Knowledge Hub' but the kind of
'knowledge' being currently displayed especially by our politicians is so putrid and vitriolic
that no one in his or her right mind would touch Mauritius with a barge pole to try to learn
anything from the mauritians. I wonder what the indian communities in Africa think of the
behaviour of the indo-mauritians. Is this the way they will also behave when they breed
themselves into power? I do not think the africans will allow this to happen!
The mauritian nation is four streams (hindu, chinese, creole, muslim) flowing separately,
parallel to each other. We live under the illusion that this is hardwired in our brains and
cannot be unwired. There are walls separating the streams. We spend our lives standing
on our toes looking over the wall at what the other stream is doing, in what direction it is
moving. From time to time we remove a brick from the wall and declare there is no
communalism on our side of the wall. But it is always a lie. Only when the streams strike
an immovable object that the they will be forced to merge forming a single one (not a
rainbow!) and never break up again. Unity appears in times of calamity. We briefly
experience this unity when a cyclone strikes the island. We desperately need a calamity,
a crisis that has no end!
The news item below is but one of the instances of racism exhibited during the campaign.
It is ugly, coming from a brain that is still living in our painful past. If our future is always
tainted with the past then it is no longer the future. It is not a pure future. During this
campaign 'Amnesty International' is giving the politicians a lesson in objectivity and
fairness. But the latter are very poor students displaying a moronic style of thinking
whenever they open their mouths. In this campaign the only group worth voting for is
'Amnesty International'. But as they are not allowed to field candidates the only intelligent
action a truly fair minded person can take is not to vote. To vote is to jump into the septic
hole in which our politicians have lived since the first white man set foot on this island.
One of the most stinking flowers of communalism displayed so far in the compaign by
one of the candidates is from a Minister who told his listeners that when Berenger looks
at him he does not see a man wearing a suit and tie but one wearing a 'langouti' and a 'dhoti'.
I think that the mauritians who know this person would agree that he always seems to
have a chip on his shoulder. His smile is never genuine. He seems to have never
experienced a moment of happiness in his life. I hope the chip does not transform into
a boulder after the election if his party wins. It would be a 'crushing victory' for him!
After the result of the election is announced and it does matter which side wins, I will
write a last post and Kailash shall say goodbye to everyone here. There is a chance that a
seismic change could suddenly occur in the mauritian psyche and there is a historic
surprise result.
I might return after the revolution. Some here might might say "good riddance" but so
be it.
After the election the "roder bouttes' will no doubt come out of the woodworks like termites
ready to munch to oblivion the taxpayers money. If you do not know what a "roder boutte"
is, here is its definition published in one of the newspapers:
Roder Boutte
This term has become entrenched in the Mauritian political culture. It refers
to anyone who wiggles his way to power through his connections with politicians.
The roder bouttes are working full blast during election time. Some are agents,
others help in various ways. When the elections are over, if the party they have
supported wins, they are home and dry. Some will be appointed as 'advisors' who
perhaps will never get a chance to advise on anything other than what the minister
will have for lunch. Others will sit on parastatal bodies and will have a handsome
package. All of them will have the opportunity to jet around the world at the taxpayers
expense.
I say Amen to the last sentence!
